Music by Jim DePriest
The Raven is a masterpiece of encapsulating the grief of losing someone close to you and the struggle to overcome that loss. In this interpretation of the classic poem, time is the center piece. It is time that it takes to mourn a loss and time that is our enemy as we endure pain. Midnight Dreary opens with a giant chord, like a curtain rising, then only the sound of a clock, slowly ticking as time passes. I was fortunate to have an outstanding violinist and guitar player, so I originally wrote the solos for those instruments. I have re-written it for a solo flute, but it could be any instrument and I would be glad to write for whatever instrument you need. As far as the guitar part, it is not necessary for the shows success since I wrote the music to be played with or without that part. The Raven can be complete with or without the script. A wonderful way to incorporate great literature and music in a cross-curricular experience.
